Golden Pantry & Thrift is seeking an experienced and mission-driven Store Manager to lead our retail operations in support of our food pantry and programs. The manager will be responsible for driving sales and donations, managing day-to-day store operations, and delivering an exceptional customer and volunteer experience. As a key contributor to the organization’s financial sustainability, the Thrift Store Manager plays a critical role in advancing our mission to serve individuals and families experiencing hardship or crisis.
The ideal candidate is both business-savvy and community-oriented, with experience in retail management, a passion for service, and strong leadership skills. This position requires flexibility, creativity, and a collaborative spirit to help build a welcoming, efficient, and mission-aligned retail environment. The schedule for the Store Manager fluctuates and may be required to work evenings, events, and holidays.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Operations
- Lead, train, and supervise a team of volunteers in all aspects of store operations including merchandising, cashiering, sorting, pricing, and customer service.
- Create a positive, inclusive, and productive work environment for volunteers of all backgrounds and abilities.
- Develop daily, weekly, and monthly work plans that align with the organization’s revenue goals and community values.
- Monitor store appearance, cleanliness, and merchandising to ensure an attractive and organized shopping environment.
- Maintain consistent, mission-aligned customer service standards.
Retail Management
- Oversee all aspects of thrift retail operations including receiving, sorting, pricing, and displaying merchandise.
- Manage inventory control systems, loss prevention strategies, and pricing procedures to maximize profitability and minimize waste.
- Forecast sales, track performance metrics, and prepare monthly reports for leadership.
- Maintain a strong working knowledge of secondhand retail trends, customer needs, and community demographics.
- Ensure accurate and responsible handling of cash, credit transactions, and end-of-day reconciliations.
Strategic Planning & Marketing
- Collaborate with leadership to develop store strategies that support the food pantry’s operational budget and long-term sustainability.
- Plan and execute seasonal promotions, special sales, and community events that drive store traffic and awareness.
- Assist with marketing efforts in collaboration with the outreach team, including signage, social media posts, and in-store displays.
- Cultivate relationships with donors, customers, and community partners to encourage engagement and recurring support.
Procurement & Merchandising
- Oversee acquisition and rotation of donated goods, ensuring a consistent supply of high-quality items that reflect community needs and interests.
- Develop merchandising strategies that increase sales and support the pantry’s mission-driven narrative.
- Occasionally create or procure mission-related products (e.g., pantry tote bags, branded items) to build awareness and additional revenue streams.
Administrative & Compliance
- Maintain accurate records of sales, donations, volunteer hours, and inventory.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety standards, nonprofit retail regulations, and organization-wide policies.
- Work closely with the Executive Director to align store operations with the broader mission and financial goals of Golden Pantry & Thrift.
Qualifications & Experience:
- 2 years of retail management experience, preferably in a nonprofit, thrift, or secondhand retail setting.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a team, including volunteers.
- Strong customer service orientation and the ability to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds with compassion and professionalism.
- Experience with cash handling and POS systems; Square or similar platform preferred.
- Financial literacy including budgeting, forecasting, and sales tracking.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel and Word).
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in a physically active environment.
- Flexible schedule including availability on some weekends and evenings.
- Experience working with vulnerable populations or in a community resource setting is a plus.
Work Environment: Golden Pantry & Thrift operates in a dynamic, mission-focused environment. The role requires physical stamina, flexibility, and a passion for people. The work may occasionally take place in non-climate-controlled settings or involve exposure to donated goods.
Status & Classification: Regular | Part-Time | Non-Exempt
Pay Rate: $19 to $25/hour
Work Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday; 9:30 a.m.-4:15 p.m. (up to 25 hours/week). The schedule for the Store Manager fluctuates and may be required to work evenings, events, and holidays.
This position is not currently eligible for benefits.
