POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position:    Market Assistant

Reports to:    President; with regular oversight by Market Manager 

Job Location:    On site at the Golden Farmers Market weekly 

Golden Farmers Market Overview:  The Golden Farmers Market (GFM) is produced and managed by the Golden Chamber of Commerce.  A long-standing tradition in the Golden community, we strive to contribute to the success of local food growers and producers, as well as other businesses, and create vibrant community gatherings.  The market takes place from late May through early October, each Saturday morning from 8am – 1pm.  Traditionally, the market showcases approximately 70 vendors and attracts 1500-2000 people at each market.  GFM is a participant in the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and the Double Up Food Bucks program, and a member of the Colorado Farmers Market Association.

Market Assistant Overview: The purpose of the Market Assistant position is to assist with all on site aspects of the Golden Farmers Market every Saturday, May 31st through October 4th  of the 2025 market season and to support and assist farmers market customers who qualify for SNAP and other food assistance programs. 

Essential Functions:

  • Helping with any needed Set up and tear down of the market (with assistance from volunteers as available) to include: 

    • Assisting volunteers and helping to coordinate their duties at the market

    • Set up of market management booth and other booths not operated by market vendors

    • Traffic control

    • Putting up/taking down street sign/ barriers throughout market and adjacent streets

  • Monitoring vendor activities during the market to ensure adherence to Market policies.

  • Assisting customers that come into the market by answering questions, etc

  • Assist with maintaining a clean and customer-friendly market space. This includes emptying trash/compost/recycle bins when they are full during the market; keeping the entrance/exit areas tidy and welcoming; making sure we have adequate signage up to assist customers in understanding the market rules

  • Assist market vendors as needed. This may mean offering to watch their booth so they may take a break to use the restroom or get food; helping them with the set up and tear down of their booth; and other duties as assigned by the Market Manager.

  • Provide oversight of the SNAP program and SNAP market booth to include: 

    •  Set up and tear down of the SNAP booth (with assistance from volunteers as available)

    • Assisting customers with receiving their SNAP benefits and providing education to those utilizing SNAP for the first time

    • Completing EBT/EFT transactions using wireless POS devices and accounting for market coupons.

    • Assist customers with understanding and utilizing the Double Up Food Bucks program

    • Assist vendors in accepting and understanding both the SNAP and the Double Up Food Bucks program

    • Track all usage and required data for SNAP and Double Up Food Bucks

    • Maintain the POS device that allows our market to process SNAP/EBT

    • Create a booth space that is highly visible and educational

  • Other duties, as assigned, to support SNAP and the overall mission of the Golden Farmers Market as assigned by the Golden Farmers Market Manager

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed outdoors at the Farmers Market site in a variety of weather conditions from high temperatures in full sun to cool or cold conditions with rain or snow.

  • Most work is performed in daylight hours but at certain times of the season may begin in pre-dawn conditions.

Hours: 

Saturdays 5:45 a.m. – 2:15 pm (with one 30 minute break)

Limited training may take place during agreed upon weekday hours prior to the opening of the market for the season. 

Salary and Benefits:   This is a 8-10 hour per week seasonal position. Salary range is $21-23 per hour, commensurate with experience. 

Employment Type: Hourly, seasonal employee of the Golden Chamber of Commerce (owner and operator or the Golden Farmers Market). The Farmers Market runs weekly from May 31-October 4. This position will start with limited hours 2 weeks prior to the first market date for training (Approximately May 19). 

Physical Requirements: 

  • The ability to lift, push, pull  40 pounds regularly

  • The ability to respond quickly

  • The ability to be on your feet for several hours at a time

  • The ability to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces

  • The ability to see and respond to dangerous situations as needed

  • The ability to work outdoors in summer and fall weather conditions

  • The ability to wear personal protective gear correctly most of the day, when required due to local mandates
