Watercolor: Synthesizing East and West
Three-day watercolor workshop with Cheng-Khee Chee

Juror Cheng-Khee Chee will take students on an exploration synthesizing East and West approaches to watercolor painting while explaining the philosophy and principles behind his creativity. Chee will demonstrate his various concepts and guide the participants to develop their own artistic directions.
Chee believes an environment conducive to learning is the one that stresses flexibility, fun, fellowship and the spirit of caring and cooperation.
The workshop schedule will include:
1) saturated wet process,
2) improvisational approach,
3) crinkling technique.
Class will begin each day with a demonstration explaining a different concept and process, followed by individual attention with each participant as they apply the new experiential techniques to their own works.
Artist Statement in regard to Workshop
“The exploratory nature of this workshop requires participants to work in the studio. Therefore, they must bring their sketches and reference material for each day’s project. A new concept or process often takes an artist a long time to develop and perfect. Even though some artists are able to do excellent paintings during the workshop, they should stress the process rather than product. They should try to thoroughly understand the process, work on it during the workshop and paint masterpieces in their own studio when they have more time to practice.”
About the Instructor:
Foothills Art Center is thrilled to announce Cheng-Khee Chee, considered one of the finest contemporary watercolor artists in America, as juror for the 38th annual Rocky Mountain National Watermedia exhibition. Chee, now Associate Professor Emeritus of the University of Minnesota, first exhibited his work in the RMNW in 1976 in its third annual exhibition. His work has been a perennial favorite ever since. Chee is a Dolphin Fellow of the American Watercolor Society, signature member of the National Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America (Master Status), member of the Watercolor USA Honor Society, among other recognitions. He has been represented in numerous national juried exhibitions and captured over 200 honors, including the American Watercolor Society Silver Medal, Transparent Watercolor Society of America Skyledge Award (First Place), Allied Artists of America Gold Medal, and Knickerbocker Artists USA Grand Award Gold Medal and Purchase Prize for Excellence.
Born in China, raised in Malaysia, and living in the United States since 1962, both East and West experiences and influences have shaped Chee’s artistic career. Chee has mastered and developed many techniques, including traditional watercolor approach, Chinese brush painting and saturated wet process, and his unique splash color, crinkling, marbleizing and mono-printing techniques. Chee is well-known for his paintings of koi, goldfish and birds, as well as florals, landscapes, cityscapes, and his illustration work in the children's books Old Turtle, Noel, and Swing Around the Sun.
