Event Description:
RMQM’s 30th Anniversary Celebration Exhibit and Eugenia Mitchell Solo Exhibit | Eugenia’s Dream – 30 Years in the Making. We are excited to have reopened the Museum and to present quilts from The Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum’s permanent collection. The exhibit spans decades of exquisite quilts both hand-stitched and machine-stitched, from traditional to modern and art quilts. Our success is in large part due to our many volunteers, donors, members, and staff, some of who have spent years working to grow this 30-year organization. The mission of the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and educate the public about quilts; honor quiltmaking traditions; and embrace the evolution of the art and craft of quilting. The Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum (RMQM) was the dream of long-time Golden resident, Eugenia Mitchell, who wanted her quilts to be both seen by the public and preserved for the future. After incorporating in 1982, RMQM opened its doors to the public in 1990 with a gift of 101 quilts from Eugenia’s private collection. In 1991, RMQM received its first grant from Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD). Using all volunteer labor and funds from this grant, a museum-quality storage system was installed. From its humble beginnings, RMQM has continued to grow. Our collection now numbers over 800 quilts and includes both traditional quilts as well as contemporary studio quilts. Included in our collection are 63 art quilts that were donated in 2004-2005 by more than 50 quilt artists from all over the world; this collection of quilts is known as “Rooted in Tradition: Art Quilts from the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum.” Most recently, an internationally known quiltmaker chose RMQM as the permanent home for her collection of 108 miniature quilts that represent the history of quilting.
