Quilt Museum Evolutions: Looking Back

Evolutions 2022, a juried quilt challenge open to all quilters and fiber artists in celebration of one’s own personal journey in the quilting arts. The challenge: to have quilters look back at their very first quilt to where they are at this point in the evolution of their quilting. Evolution: defined as growth—a process of continuous change, from lower to higher or from simpler to more complex. Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum challenged the entrants to create their concept of an evolution quilt that represents their transition in the art of quilting. The entrants could interpret evolutions any way they chose—on a personal level, on a global level, or related to changes and growth of their favorite means of creative expression, the quilt. Ribbons for first, second, and third place will be announced at RMQM’s opening reception on Friday, April 22, 2022. The first place winner will have a solo exhibit at RMQM in 2023. What Did Ming Miss? The Kathy Suprenant Solo Exhibit: In 2006, scientists dredged up a small clam from the North Atlantic off the coast of Iceland. Using radiometric dating as well as counting the growth lines in the shell, they determined that the clam was 507 years old. The clam was nicknamed “Ming” because it was “born” circa 1499, during the Chinese Ming dynasty. Kathy, a retired science professor, wondered what Ming missed during those 507 years and Ming became her artistic muse. Initially, her intent was to address playful topics and translate her ideas in bright colors in her art style. Many of the quilts are colorful, whimsical and idiomatic. However, much of the artwork is serious, topical and wrapped in social commentary. We invite you to explore Kathy’s work and the artists in the Evolutions exhibit, entertaining and educational!
